A graphic illustration of the power used by the internet ….

A Power Hungry Internet

Review:  Well it makes you think. The power used by the internet continues to grow, particularly as cloud computing expands. At least there seems to be some effort to reduce power consumption, although it’s only going to slow the growth, rather than reduce it.

Let’s just hope that an increasing amount of internet use will be as part of applications and solutions aimed at reducing emissions elsewhere in the economy. That way it may actually contribute to overall emissions reductions.

The fact that struck me is that it takes 30 nuclear power plants to keep the world’s data centres running, and Google could pay for the lot with a year’s profit! To it’s credit, Google is investing a lot of money on renewable energy, so is making a real contribution that way.
